On Clarity & Collaboration
Clarity. The crystalline vision we all desire in life, in business, and often literally even in wine.
However, it’s tough to find clarity. In business, it demands time, and people are busy. Markets are crowded and uncertain. Sometimes we even speak different languages.
The wine industry is a prime example. Things can get a bit convoluted, but one common theme always prevails: Successful outcomes are built on a clear plan, carried out by the right leader.
It sounds so simple, but achieving clarity in business takes preparation and refinement, and time. Developing a clear plan is a step that can easily get pushed aside in the face of new projects and urgent deadlines. As Steve Jobs once famously said, “Simple can be harder than complex”. He continues, “You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”
Reaching back to my competitive basketball days, it reminds me of executing a perfectly planned play. Those wins at the buzzer don’t just happen.
The big wins happen when preparation finally meets opportunity.
What “play” does your organization need to develop? Perhaps it is a plan for digital marketing, communications, trade marketing, US market management, or some combination to bring it all together.
Clearly communicated plans are a roadmap to achieve success for executives, teams, and organizations. They can help us move through unexpected challenges with purpose and focus, and positively affect the bottom line.
Once you have clarity, it’s time for collaboration.
One of my greatest joys in business is collaborating with the principals behind different wineries and brands, both domestically and globally. Working with the right partner can lighten the load for both, and generate a better result. Collaborating with select experts can also be a path to success, whether they are designers, photographers, web developers, trade specialists, or a whole host of areas.
Once you arrive on the best plan and reliable partners, the power lies in the clarity and collaboration. One of my favorite questions to ask clients is, “What industry challenge are you facing that needs clarity?” Then, it’s time to get to work. Together.
